Title: Extinction curves and the total-to-selective extinction ratio for dust formed in the type II SN 2005ip

Supervisors: Jens Hjorth

Abstract: This thesis focuses on calculating the extinction curves and the total-to-selective extinction ratio for the type IIn SN 2005ip. The light curves have a clear drop off around 50 days after discovery which is assumed to be due to dust formation directly in the SN. The dust formation is thought to happen in a cold dense shell between the forward and reverse shock. The extinction is found from assuming different models for the intrinsic light curves in the UV, optical and NIR photometric bands. The total-to-selective extinction ratio, Rv, is calculated from the extinction in the B and V bands. Rv is an indicator of the dust grain size from the inclination of the extinction curves. Rv found in this project is smaller than expected when compared to a corresponding value for another type IIn SN.
