I am a PhD student with an interest in galaxy formation and evolution, star formation and the metal enrichment of the circum-galactic medium. My research focuses on galaxies selected via their gas cross section towards background quasars. This technique avoids bias towards the most luminous “tip of the ice-berg” accessed by conventional methods, and is believed to probe a more representative portion of the gas-rich galaxy population. In particular, I want to understand which sight-lines through galaxies cause damped Lyman-alpha absorption (DLAs), and what such systems reveal about their hosts.
